As an approach
to integrating the country-wise progress on
piloting of the Safe Water, Food and Hygiene
project, an inter-country follow-up workshop
was also organised by Dr. Terrene Thompsoo,
WSH, WHO-SEARO in Kathmandu during 21-25 July
2003. Concerned officials of the governments,
NGOs, UNICEF and WHO from Bangladesh, India,
Nepal and Myanmar along with Dr. Rebert Quick
attended the workshop. Through this workshop
the participating SEAR countries indentified
their need for an inter-country project to support
their initiatives using integrated approached
to reduce the burden of dirrhoeal diseases.

As a follow-up
of the above, Dr. Pavani Kalluri, another
Medical Epidemiologist of the CDC visited
Bangladesh in November 2003, Her visit
contributed to crystalising the proposition
further in the from of an initiative through
Dushtha Shasthya Kendra (DSK), a national
NGO involved in various health-related
activities, at selected slums located
within Dhaka City. At present, drawing
on the above progress, two slum areas
at Baoniabadh and Kamalapur, Dhaka have

selected through tripartite field visits
and discussion among CDC, WHO and DSK. It
is expected that the WHO Environmental Health
Unit, through DSK as the partner NGO, will
be able to launch the pilot project on SWS
in Dhaka city slum areas at Baoniabadh and
Kamalapur. |
