Progress in Polio Eradication
Estimated & Reported Polio Cases, 1985-2002

Partners of polio eradication

  1. WHO, UNICEF, U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention-Atlanta, and Rotary International are spearheading the Global campaign for polio eradication.
  2. Core partners that have given their full support include Ted Turner's United Nation Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, World Bank, Govt. of Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and USA.

Future needs for polio eradication

  1. Once polio is eradicated, no child will need to be vaccinated against polio ever again; global savings will be approximately US$1.5 billion annually.
  2. WHO estimates that a total of approximately US$ l billion will be needed from external sources until polio eradication is certified globally in 2005. Of this 1 billion, a shortfall of 300 million dollars still exists. Eighty percent of the external needs are required for the purchase of polio vaccine.
  3. Bangladesh will have to conduct additional NIDs until polio eradication is certified in the region; this will not likely occur until 2005;
  4. Bangladesh will require approximately US$65 million to achieve eradication and maintain polio free status until certification in 2005.
